Garden of the Gods Blue Frame Photo Op: Violation of Cultural Landscapes

Why does one feel the need to place their mark on nature? Why obscure the original beauty that took billions of years to create and humankind says, “Just let me add a toluene, xylene, and acetone, three headed baby inducing, icing to make that rock complete…” Imagine my horror at the addition of a BLUE frame structure to the Garden of the Gods Park. Horrible memories of twenty-five years ago come crashing through my head....

The last week of October, Manitou explodes in redefining Halloween; our famous phantoms are honored and revered (never feared), actors decked out in Victorian costume eager to explain why “they” are forever here, lost “zombie” tourist wonder the back alleys waiting for you, Wakes held for a lady we never met, merchants graciously throw open their skeleton adorned doors for Trick-or-Treating, the race starting line is set, and spectators are anxiously waiting. Hold on to your wigs & …fangs? Yes, the Emma Crawford Coffin Race will be ready to begin.

How A Thanksgiving Meal Became A Beloved Pet

No one told me. No one prepared me that I would step into a world where a pet would own me as much as I owned it. A pet that assigned me a special greeting alerted to strangers as far as a dog and demanded attention as much as a cat. No one else uttered insane phrases like, “I have to get back home for “cushion time.” Confused looks were the unusual response, but I did not have the time to explain. “Cushion time” occurred every evening that summer.  Darjeeling would be waiting......

Hidden Manitou Springs: Crystal Valley Cemetery

     What does a Union General, a toddler, a pianist, a pioneer doctor, and a mummy all have in common? Four out of the five reside in a hidden cemetery nestled in a valley nook. All except the mummy which was last seen at a county fair in Seattle, Washington but started out in our Crystal Valley Cemetery. I'll explain him in a minute.
